Towns around Spa
Besides Spa there are more interesting towns which are worthwhile visiting. Around these places are often nice walking routes, but of course shopping is also a possibility. Further on we describe shortly some towns around Spa. Of course this list is not complete, there are many other beautiful places worthwhile paying a visit.
Malmedy
Malmedy lies about 20 kilometres from Spa. The city has beautiful old buildings, among which a cathedral build as abbey church in 1775. The cavens house a former aufaniche, is now a paper and carnival museum. On the hill of Livremont north of the city is a walking route (de Kruisweg) on which you come near a point of view where you can see Malmedy from above.
Eupen
The city of Eupen lies nearby the German border about 40 km north of Spa. It has monuments as the Town hall, 5 churches and the ‘patriciershuis’. The chocolate museum is also there. You can learn about the history of chocolate and take a look at the production. Only a few kilometres from Eupen on the edge of the Hertogen forest lies the Eupen stuwdam and the lake with many walking routes.
Liège / Luik
On a half our drive from Spa lies Luik near the river Maas. This town has many places worth visiting, such as the overwhelming ‘Montagne de Bueren’ a staircase with 374 stairs. Shopping in Luik is almost an expedition. In the traffic free streets are many shops and boutiques and in the smaaler streets you find unique little shops. Sundays there is an big market place along the river Maas with a large offer of different products.
Maastricht
This town has an long history, which goes back to the Romans. This history you find back in the historic city centre with various Roman stile churches and a lot of squares. The most famous is the Vrijthof near the Servaas church. Nowadays Maastricht is known as a bourgondic where you can eat, drink and enjoy yourself. It is a 45 minute drive from Spa.
Aken
Aken lies near the river Maas about 55 km from Spa. This town is the most western laying town of Germany and leis near the three country point on the Vaalserberg. Aken belong to the Bundesland Noord-Rijnland-Westfalen and offers many shopping opportunities.
